What a waste - Compulsory wood recycling may be close

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND BOTH have public policy commitments to reduce all kinds of waste and to increase recycling and reuse. But when it comes to timber, a general lack of viable recycling options and resources is apparently making it all 'too hard'. In 1999, Dunedin City Council (DCC), along with many other local bodies, proudly committed to the 'National Zero Waste Pilot Project' organised by the Zero Waste NZ Trust. The objective is to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2015. Six years down theline, Ian Satterthwaite of DCC admits that when it came to timber, they tried their best to start recycling but "we just got into an awful mess and couldn't cope with all the different kinds of products" Most of the city's wood waste is still going to landfill.
