IT LOOKS LIKE NEW ZEALAND NEEDS A WOOD promotion campaign. The desirability, environmental advantages and benefits of timber- over other construction materials are not well understood. Take a recent encounter between our editor (heavily disguised as atourist) and a lately retired couple from a successful business life while pleasure cruising the lovely Kaipara Harbour northwest of Auckland Pointing out their huge and recently built residence - one of the most grand and spectacularly located in the region - they were proud to say that it was almost entirely constructed from concrete. "We saved a lot of trees - it is very environmentally friendly." Needless to say, our man did his best to argue the pro-wood point, but there was no swaying their conviction.
