Hard work, not luck. "Some people look at what we've got and say, gee, you guys are lucky' but I tell you what, we worked bloody hard to get this far," says Kevin Charles. It's 16 years since Kevin and Jill Charles started logging and they've certainly climbed the ladder, from a compact skidder/loader operation for Baigent Forests in Nelson to their current four crew, 30-man operation in Carter Holt Harvey Forests' Nelson estates. That's meant putting in some hard yards, including five years in Nelson's Lee Forest in steep, sometimes overhanging terrain'-- an object lesson in how even the most dangerous country can be logged safely.
