Redwood Memorial Grove reached 100 years

The Redwood Memorial Grove, in Rotorua, is one of the oldest exotic forests in New Zealand, dating from 1898. The stand is part of early plantings of Whakarewarewa Forest by New Zealand's forestry pioneers in which they tried out virtually every timber species of renown. The throve is now part of the Tokorangi Forest, which amounts to 290 hectares, and is owned by the Rotorua community. It provides a scenic backdrop to the city, so has important recreation and amenity values, along with being a tourist attraction. Because of the Redwood Grove's magnificent appearance, this stand has been dedicated as a memorial to the men of the New Zealand Forest Service who served during the two world wars.
