Worldwide raw-steel production increased in January

Production in the former U.S.S.R. fell to 5.8 million mt from 6.5 million mt in December. The region has been struggling to get energy supplies because of strikes, the IISI says. Worldwide production in January was down by 2 percent compared with Jan. 1995. "The early year figures-results of falling demand, slow economic growth, and oversupply in developed nations and stagnating growth in developing ones-are expected to be followed by recovery later in the year," the IISI says. The recovery will be led by growth in Asian countries such as China and South Korea, it says.
