Steel Dynamics chooses Inmetco DRI process

Steel Dynamics Inc. has drafted a letter of intent to build a direct-reduced-iron plant that uses the Inmetco process, says Keith Busse, SDI's CEO. Inmetco is a coal-based process that reduces iron-ore concentrate; the process is marketed by Mannesmann Demag. The plant probably will be on-site at SDI or in Toledo, Ohio. Iron content of the DRI will be 86-87 percent, compared with 90 percent and above for other processes. "It has one of the lowest iron contents, along with Fastmet," Busse says. Gangue and sulfur levels will be higher, but SDI plans to have the DRI refined and de-sulfurized before it gets to its electric furnace, Busse says.
