In this new age of national and multi-regional scrap processors, here's a news flash: The small, independent scrap dealer is alive and well and living in the U.S.A. The small, independent dealers survive, sometimes thrive, because they still serve a vital function in the flow of scrap to mills and foundries by meeting the particular needs of their particular marketplaces. "We small, independent dealers are critical to the industry," says Norman Lefton, chairman, Lefton Iron & Metal Co. (East St. Louis, Ill.). "We keep the system honest. If it were not for us, the scrap marketplace would not be as competitive as it is. But it's a constant battle for us to stay alive."
