Strike at Bayou Steel ends after 3 1/2 years

Bayou Steel and United Steelworkers of America (USWA) Local 9121 agreed on a new labor contract on Sept. 23 rd, ending a bitter strike by about 220 Steelworkers that began in March 1993 ("The Battle at Bayou Steel, New Steel, June 1995). The terms of the new contract are almost identical to a company offer of March 20, 1993; local-union leaders turned that offer down. Bayou Steel expected up to 185 eligible workers to be back on the job at the LaPlace, La., minimill by Oct. 31st. The steelmaker may fire some of them for misconduct on the picket line.
