Dofasco leaves AISI over trade friction with U.S. producers

Dofasco Inc., Canada's second-largest steelmaker, has resigned from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). For two years, Canadian and Mexican steelmakers have been full members of the AISI, reflecting efforts to create a unified North American market. "We work together [with U.S. producers] in supposedly joint activities," but the U.S. producers continue to take "unnecessary and punitive trade actions" against Canadian competitors, a Dofasco spokesman says. "It was getting a touch hypocritical as far as we were concerned."
