Ceramic Cutting Tools, State of the Art and Development Trends

When successfully applied, ceramic cutting toolscan increase the metal removal rate by several times over thatobtained with conventional tool materials. Ceramic tools are eitherbased on alumina or silicon nitride and applications in metalcutting are determined by the specific material properties of thetool material in question. An understanding of the wearmechanisms is a prerequisite for further development of thesematerials. Applications and development trends are discussed.
