Fishermen leaving the port of Eureka, Calif., have to cross the Humboldt Bay bar, described by the NOAA weather forecast office in Eureka as "a treacherous area with varying depth and ocean swells and strong current flows. Boats have capsized and occasionally lives [have been] lost when transiting through the bar." John Toler fishes for Dungeness crab and eel out of Eureka and he has always been aware of the power swirling over the bar. Still, he was taken by surprise about three years ago when a particularly large wave climbed aboard his 34-foot, steel-hulled Soko.
