Orthostatic tremor - an incidental cause of postural instability and gait disorder in neurological rehabili-tation? .

We report upon two patients with a long lasting history of progressive postural instability and the fear for fall-ing. Walking, however, was initially not affected. A myopathy or normal pressure hydrocephalus were previously suspected. During a stay in a neurological rehabilitation ward we diagnosed primary orthostatic tremor. Surface electromyography in standing position showed characteristic tremor of high frequency in the leg muscles. The dis-ease might be more frequent than usually supposed and should be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of gait and standing disorders.
