This book by researchers with high international reputations in geophysics and seismology, completes this extraordinary series of three volumes devoted to acoustic and elastic wave fields in geophysics. It is extraordinary because of its thoroughnessand completeness in presenting wave theory. The previous two volumes dealt mostly with the acoustic case, i.e. wave propagation in liquid media. The volume to be reviewed here is dedicated to propagation of plane, spherical and cylindrical elastic wavesin different media including isotropic and transversely isotropic solids, liquid-solid models, and media with cylindrical inclusions (boreholes). Before we describe the general organization of the book, it should be noted that it is distinguished by thespecial detail in presenting wave theory. We mention one example among many others: very few textbooks prove the fact that Stoneley waves of the SH-type usually do not exist, but here the proof is included.
