摘要

Kenji Ohtsuka, M.D., passed away on July 20, 2005, at the age of 51. Although still young, he was an exceptional mentor to other Japanese neuro-ophthalmologists. Kenji was the youngest of three children born in 1954 in Shintotsukawa-cho in Hokkaido, which is the northernmost island in Japan. At the age of 2, his family moved to Sapporo because his father, who is a famous ophthalmologist and still active in his private clinic, accepted an academic position at Hokkaido University in Sapporo. Sapporo is the capital of the Hokkaido prefecture and the location of the Winter Olympic Games in 1972. Thereafter, Kenji grew up in Sapporo and attended Sapporo Medical University. After graduating, he accepted a position as an ophthalmologist at the Sapporo Medical University Hospital in 1981. Interested in neuro-ophthalmology, he decided to take a position in Satoshi Ishikawa's laboratory at Kitasato University in Kanagawa prefecture, near Tokyo.
