It has been over a decade since DBS was first introduced in China in 1998. The technique and application of DBS in surgical therapy for movement disorders have advanced rapidly during the last decade together with the development of neuroimaging, electro-neurophysiology, and bioengineering in China. From 1998 until now, approximately more than 30 hospitals in China have the capability of performing DBS. These institutions are located primarily in the Shanghai and Beijing areas. From 2000, there were approximately 60 papers on DBS published from China in English or Chinese. Of those 60, Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi'an contributed 38, 28, and 15, respectively. More than 2300 patients have been treated using DBS since 1998, whereas fewer than 300 patients received this treatment from 1998 to 2003. Thereafter, the number of DBS procedures has increased dramatically. There were more than 900 surgeries performed in the following four years (2004-2008), and over 1100 cases in the most recent two years. Until now, the major application (86.2%) in the whole country for DBS is Parkinson's disease, followed by dystonia at 7.61%, on which DBS has been found to be remarkably efficacious. Of the 2300 patients who underwent DBS, those between 0 and 20 years or older than 75 years each only represented 5%. Those between 45 and 54 years, 55 and 64, and 65 and 74 represented 20.56, 32.5, and 23.57, respectively. More male patients (-65.1%) received DBS treatment. We briefly summarized the developments of DBS in China in the past over ten years.
