Barnett Shale Gas Pioneer George Mitchell Left a Remarkable Legacy

George P. Mitchell, who cracked the code that allowed exploitation of first shale gas, then shale oil, died Friday in Houston. He was 94. Mitchell was called an oilman, but he made his multi-billion-dollar fortune in natural gas, developing what was first called tight gas and later unconventional gas in North Texas. The wells his Mitchell Energy and Development Corp. drilled also passed through thick shale zones that the technology of the day didn't allow the company to exploit.
