Faced with patrolling a gradually opening Arctic frontier north of Alaska, the US Coast Guard is also faced with another task — providing security for the energy companies planning on drilling for oil and gas in the region. Shell Oil has plans to drill three wells in the Chukchi Sea and two wells in the Beaufort Sea during the next two summer drilling seasons.
