Seven days after the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant could continue operating despite the seven-year battle to close the plant by the Vermont state legislature, owner Entergy pulled the plug in a move bound to increase natural gas demand in New England. To say the news was unexpected is fair considering that the plant's owners have successfully fended off voracious environmental opposition since it opened in 1972 in the town of Vernon, Vermont. The plant never had a honeymoon period of warm fuzzy acceptance and if anything anti-nuclear protests in the 1970s and 1980s simmered until they emerged in force after Entergy bought the plant in 2002 for $180 million.
