Rosneft Mulls Unique Two-Train LNG Project Near Sakhalin Island

State-controlled Rosneft is proposing a unique offshore solution for an LNG scheme near Sakhalin Island. Some experts say the oil giant's proposal is the most promising among the current three rival LNG projects, which include Gazprom's Vladivostok LNG and the Yamal LNG plant being pushed by Russian independent Novatek and France's Total. Zeljko Runje, Rosneft's offshore head who was formerly with US supermajor Exxon Mobil, told NGW sister publication Nefte Compass that the company would build an LNG plant on a barge but it would not be a standard "floating LNG plant." The company would tow it to the site near the port at De Kastri on the mainland near Sakhalin and sink it offshore onto prepared foundations in water that is "not so deep."
