Greens, Industry Differ on Arctic Drilling Rules

Interest in the hydrocarbon resources in the Arctic Ocean off-shore Canada puts an enormous obligation on the northern na-tion to develop a regulatory regime that will protect the Inuit native group and other local citizenry while allowing environ-mentally responsible oil and gas exploration and development. That is the conclusion of a report, Becoming Arctic Ready, prepared by the Pew Environmental Group for Oceans Nforth Canada, a Pew project working to protect life in the Arctic. The report was issued just prior to last week's hear-ings by Canada's National Energy Board (NEB) as it pre-pares to formulate new rules and policies for Arctic drilling in the post-BP Macondo era (p2).
