Rowan Moves With Deepwater Drillships

Houston-based Rowan Cos. continued its strategic plan to move into the ultra-deepwater drilling market last week with a $1.2 billion purchase of two newbuild drillships. The vessels, costing $605 million each, will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries at its shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. The first vessel is scheduled for a late 201.3 delivery and the second by mid-2014. "Our long-stated strategy has been to locus on and diversify our offshore drilling business." said Rowan Chief Executive Matt Ralls, "and we are excited to take this first step into the ultra-deepwater sector."
