Panda Power Funds Finances Natural Gas Plant

Panda Power Funds has financed the 1,124-megawatt natural-gas fired combined cycle power plant, Panda Hummel Station, which is one of the largest coal-to-gas power conversion projects in the US. The plant will replace retired Sun-bury coal-fired plant near Shamokin Dam in Snyder County, Pennsylvania. The 65-year-old 400-MW Sunbury plant was shuttered in 2014 as low natural gas prices and strict environmental regulations made it uneconomical, Panda said. The Panda Hummel generating station will be able to take advantage of Marcellus Shale gas, which should provide a significant operating cost advantage. The plant is expected to supply sizable power markets, which include the Philadelphia and New York metropolitan areas, and is expected to enter commercial operations in the first quarter of 2018.
