Hydropower Being Eclipsed by Other Renewables

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that non-hydro renewables will provide more than twice as much generation as historically-dominant hydropower generation by 2040, according to EIA's Annual Energy Outlook 2014. Hydropower has long been the main source of renewable generation, accounting for three times as much generation in the US as non-hydro renewable sources. Nonetheless, US hydropower generation was eclipsed by non-hydro generation for eight consecutive months starting in October 2012, which was also the first month on record to see such an inversion, the EIA said.
