New York Laying Groundwork for Development of Marcellus Shale

The state of New York has begun laying groundwork for the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technology in the development of the Marcellus Shale, which extends through southwestern parts of the state. Earlier this month, Gov. David Patterson signed a bill extending the State's uniform well spacing system to include horizontal wells — a relatively new technology to the region. The bill will help streamline permits for new wells by standardizing the above-ground spacing between them instead of making determinations on a case-by-case basis.
