After two exploratory wells failed to find sufficient amounts of natural gas, Exxon Mobil is abandoning a project to explore for shale gas in Poland. Company officials said the decision was made for Exxon to end the project because "there have been no demonstrated sustained commercial hydrocarbon flow rates." The company bought six licenses in eastern and central Poland in 2009-10. Polish Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak was quoted in published reports as saying Exxon can give up its licenses or sell them to another firm. The fast-paced development of shale plays in the US helped spur Exxon's decision to explore for shale gas in Poland. And despite Exxon's exit Chevron, Poland's state PGNiG and 24 other companies are still in the race for Polish unconventional gas.
