Mega-Merger to Create No. 2 US Power Provider

In a move that creates the second largest electricity generation producer in the US, Mirant and RRIEnergy last week agreed to merge in an all-stock deal and create GenOn Energy. The new companywill have about 24,700 MW of generating capacity, putting it slightly behind IPP Calpine (25,000MW) and slightly ahead of NRG Energy (24,000 MW). With a market capitalization of about $3.1billion, GenOn will have a mix of coal, natural gas and oil-fired generation in California, the Midwestand the East Coast.
