Gas Inevitably Will Usurp Coal's Role as Baseload Generation

2016 has been a banner year for gas-fired power demand, even more than 2012, when low natural gas prices and the need to contain burgeoning working gas inventories first propelled gas to challenge coal's supremacy in US power generation. Since then, gas has nipped at coal's heels until today parity is the order of the day. But unlike the conditions in 2012 that accelerated coal-gas competition, the market is entering anew phase that ensures gas will dominate regardless of price.
