The US is stepping up its efforts to unlock the secrets of methane hydrates onshore and offshore, an effort that, if successful, would create a natural gas reserve base that could dwarf the shale revolution. The US Department of Energy (DOE) is sounding out potential research projects on the North Slope of Alaska that explore how to economically extract the gas locked in ice well below the Earth's surface.
