Jack Schron, Jr., president of Jergens, Inc., Cleveland, OH, has heard it all from other manufacturing executives when it comes to training: There's not enough time. It's too expensive. It's difficult to schedule. We can't take people out of the plant to send them to a seminar. I can't measure the effectiveness of training. Faced with the closure or machine trade programs in secondary schools and the demise of apprenticeships, Schron recognized that the skills gap experienced by manufacturing was only going to get worse.
