Raising Thermal Efficiency, Temp Uniformity for Radiant-Tube Technology

Dadiant-tube technology is used widely by steelmakers and aluminum produc-ers, for reheating and annealing. The same heating principle is used in other furnaces, too, e.g. atmosphere and fluidized bed systems, for processing metal and various other products. In its 2001 "Roadmap of Process Heating Technology", the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Industrial Technologies Program identified a need for "improved performance in high-temperature materials; improved methods for stabilizing low-emission flames; (and) heating technologies that simultaneously reduce emissions, increase efficiency, and increase heat transfer." To research a solution, ITP selected a proposal by Storm Development L.L.C., Spinworks L.L.C., and Pennsylvania State University's Applied Research and Design Center--"Advanced Process Heater for Steel, Aluminum, and Chemical Industries of the Future." Their proposal --involving component engineering and integration of the advanced process heater (APH), followed by testing--aimed to double heat-transfer rates, improve thermal efficiencies by 20 percent, improve temperature uniformity by 100 deg F (38 deg C), and reduce NOx and CO_2 emissions.
