Sudden death due to massive gastric dilatation

abstract_textpBulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that affects mainly young women. Deaths due to acute massive gastric dilatation after binge eating with and without rupture have been described in the literature. A fatal consequence of bulimia nervosa in a 32-year-old woman is presented who called the emergency services and asked for medicine for vomiting. A hospitalization was proposed but the young woman refused and later the same day she was found dead in her apartment. The forensic autopsy revealed a very slim woman (BMI 21.35 kg/m(2)) with a distended abdomen. The cause was a massively enlarged stomach with a filling volume of 8,540 ml.
