Integrated Nutrient Management in Pigeonpea + Soybean Intercropping System underRainfed Conditions

An intercropping experiment was conducted during the rainy season of 2002 and 2003 with pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L) Millsp + soybean (Glycine max (L) Merril) to assess the effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on pigeonpea and soybean crop under intercropping system. Nutrients application at 100 per cent RDF (i. e. 20-60-20 kg NPK ha~(-1) for pigeonpea as base crop and 15-45-15 kg NPK ha~(-1)) for soybean as intercrop showed maximum seed yield of both crop in intercropping system. The highest plant height, No. of pods / plant, pigeonpea equivalent yield and net return, B:C ratio were recorded higher with 100 per cent RDF followed by application of 50 per cent RDF+ FYM 51 ha~(-1) + Bio-fertilizers. Application of 50 per cent RDF+ FYM 5t ha~(-1) +Bio-fertilizers proved conducive to sustain the soil health by enhancing the organic carbon, available nutrient status, nutrient uptake by both crop by reducing the bulk density of soil. This was having similar content of N, P and K in straw and grain as recorded with 100 per cent RDF. N, P and K content per cent in grain were slightly higher than that of straw in both crops. The total uptake of these nutrients by both the component crop was also higher in 100 per cent recommended dose of fertilizers followed by 50 per cent RDF+ FYM 5t ha~(-1) + Bio-fertilizers and 50 per cent RDF + Vermincompost 3t ha~(-1) + Bio-fertilizers.
