Phosphorus Fractions of Selected Banana Growing Soils of India and their Relationships with Soil Characteristics

The soils were sandy clay loam to clay loam in texture, near neutral to alkaline in soil reaction, non-saline and low to medium organic carbon status. The cation exchange capacity of soils ranged from 8.93-13.7 cmol (p~+) kg~(-1) and the active CaC0_3from 3.8- 13.6 g kg~(-1). Further, the soils were low to medium in available nitrogen, medium to high in available phosphorus, low to medium in available potassium and available sulphur. Among the DTPA extractable micronutrients, iron and manganese wererich in most soils and available zinc was deficient. The amount of different P forms i.e. Soluble-P (Saloid-P), Al-phosphates (Al-P), Fe-phosphates (Fe-P), Reductant Soluble-P (RS-P) and calcium phosphates (Ca -P) were determined and found to be rangedfrom; 3.25-14.7, 24.5-54.8, 25.2-52.7, 10.3-21.3 and 23.7-112 mg kg~(-1), respectively. Simple correlation coefficients showed that Olsen-P had a significant correlation with soluble-P, Fe-P, Al-P and Ca-P. A significant correlation was also observed between the P forms themselves, which is presumably a reflection of the existence of a dynamic relation between the chemical forms of an element in soil. Organic carbon (OC) with Fe-P and Al-P; CEC with Fe-P and Al-P and active CaC0_3 with all P fractions have negative significant correlation.
