The foundation for a new biological control journal was initiated at the UCLA Symposium entitled ‘‘New Directions in Biological Control’’ in Frisco, Colorado, in January 1989 (Baker and Dunn, 1990). From this symposium, it was apparent that a multidisciplinary journal devoted to the science and technology of biological control of pests was needed. Academic Press was interested in publishing such a new journal. In 1990, the founding editors, Raghavan Charudattan (‘‘Charu’’), W. Joe Lewis, the late Charlie E. Rogers and I, met with Academic Press to launch the new journal, Biological Control. Charu would be the first Editor-in-Chief of Biological Control and under his leadership, we developed the aim and the scope of the journal as ‘‘…the theory and application of biological control on a wide array of pests, including viruses, microbes, nematodes, insects, mites, and other arthropods, weeds, and vertebrates in agricultural, aquatic, forest, natural resource, stored product, and urban development’’ (Charudattan et al., 1991).
