A new variety of Meliola thalliformis from Brazil

Meliola thalliformis var. major var. nov., associated with leaf spots on Bathysa australis (Rubiaceae), is described and illustrated. During fungal collections undertaken in a stretch of Atlantic tropical rainforest of the nature reserve Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro in the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil), leaves of the tree Bathysa australis (St. Hil.) Benth. & Hook. f. (Rubiaceae) were found colonized by a black mildew. Besides the usual black superficial colonies of the fungus, distinct leaf spots were also seen in close association with such colonies.
