A patient in your unit acquires an infection, and you wonder how it happened. Rarely do you learn the answer. But, feeling the need to do something, you review unit protocols and remind your colleagues to wash their hands and wear gloves. For a few days, everyone's awareness is raised, but then the unit gets busy, and people are a little less diligent. And when another patient gets an infection, the cycle starts over.
