摘要

Children with celiac disease have poor bone health, even after 1 year on a gluten-free diet, according to a Canadian study. A low intake of vitamins D and K could reduce bone health; therefore, these vitamins should be added to the diets of children with this disease."Our prior work has shown that children and adolescents seen at our Celiac Clinics have reduced bone mineral density, even in the absence of gastrointestinal symptoms," explains lead author Diana Mager. As childhood is a critical period for growth and development, bone deficiencies at this stage could have long-term effects. These findings led the authors to investigate the relationship between vitamins D and K and bone health in these children, particularly the effects of a gluten-free diet.Mager and Turner included 54 children aged 3-17 years who had celiac disease in their study. The researchers measured the children's bone mineral density at the time of diagnosis and after 1 year on a gluten-free diet. Levels of vitamins D and K were measured, and lifestyle factors such as diet and sunlight exposure were determined from responses to a questionnaire.
