Noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) is common; the condition affects up to one-third of the general population.Moreover, the effect of NCCP on an individual's quality of life, in terms of both physical and mental functioning, is considerable. A subgroup of people with NCCP have functional chest pain (FCP), which is defined by the Rome III criteria as midline chest pain or discomfort, without evidence of gastroesophageal reflux or esophageal motility disorders. Unfortunately, treatment options for patients with FCP have not been sufficiently explored and are currently very limited. Indeed, very few studies have been conducted so far and often have a small sample size and substandard study design.
