Interventional cardiology: cardiac device lead extraction-similar outcomes in the OR and EP laboratory.

Transvenous extraction of leads from cardiac devices is associated with similar outcomes and frequency of complications when performed in the operating room (OR) and in the electrophysiology (EP) laboratory, shows a new study published in Heart Rhythm.A trend towards performing this procedure in the EP laboratory, rather than the OR, has been reported. According to the investigators, however, the safety and efficacy of the two approaches had not been previously compared in a side-by-side analysis.The researchers analyzed data prospectively collected between 2000 and 2010 at two referral centers in Canada and France in which a transition between transvenous lead extraction settings occurred during this period. A total of 1,364 lead extractions (533 in the OR and 831 in the EP laboratory), performed during 684 procedures, were analyzed in the study.
