The self-assembly of nanocrystal–J-aggregate hybrid nanostructures (HNSs) was performed by mixing two AOT–water–hexane solutions of reverse micelles, one of which contained J-aggregates of the 3,3'- di(γ-sulfopropy1)-4,5,4',5'-dibenzo-9-ethylcarbocyanine betaine pyridinium salt dye and the other contained AgI nanocrystals. Two new absorption bands of the dye were found at λ_(max)≈673 nm and λ_(max),≈ 695 nm during the formation of HNSs; the hands corresponded to J-aggregates of different structures adsorbed on nanocrystals. The excess iodide ions necessary for the synthesis of AgI nanocrystals was found to be the chief factor governing the self-assembly of HNSs, which suggests that the crystal lattice plays an important role for the self-assembly of HNSs. The components of the HNS affect each other symbiotically in that nanocrystals increase the photostability of J-aggregates and the adsorbed J-aggregate effectively stabilizes the size of nanocrystals. The resulting stable HNSs could be extracted from the micellar solution without further aggregation.
