ALUMINUM PRICE TRENDS IN AUGUST 2007

As reported in our last volume 201, the sub-prime loan crisis in the US had a global impact on the securities and commodities markets. And LME prices fell considerably in August affected by the sharp declines in those markets. Opening LME three-month price for August was at the level of 2,738 dollars/ ton. However, the price dropped to 2,468 dollars/ton on August 21, a very large fall of 270 dollars, or almost 10 percent . Spot prices for primary aluminum in Japan moved in line with the LME and rapid rise in the value of yen. These escalated the rate of decline in the aluminum price further and it fell to RMB 313,000 /ton in the latter half of August from the opening level of RMB 355,000/ ton, down RMB 42,000, or approximately 12 percent .
