ALUMINUM PRICE TRENDS IN AUGUST 2003

August spot price for primary aluminum in Japan fell by more than 10,000 Japanese Yen from the level exceeding 205,000 Japanese Yen per ton at the start of the month to 195,000 Japanese Yen at the end. Three-month LME prices remained around 1,430 US Japanese Yen, but as the yen strengthened it affected the domestic spot price which lowered its level. (The TTS yen exchange rate against the US dollar was 121.55 Japanese Yen on August 1. Exchange rate on August 29 was 118.15 Japanese Yen.) In September, spot price remained unchanged from the end of August for a while. But, both the cash and three-month prices on the LME fell below 1,400 dollars on September 10 and the spot market price in Japan fell further. And as of mid-September, spot price stood at the higher end of 180,000 Japanese Yen.
