ALUMINUM PRICE TRENDS IN JANUARAY 2003

Three-month LME aluminum prices strengthened from the 1,350 dollars-per-ton level at the beginning of January to above 1,400 dollars by the end of the month. Domestic spot aluminum price, in response to the LME market, rose by more than 10,000 Japanese Yen to 198,000 Japanese Yen per ton at the end of the month from 187,000 Japanese Yen at the start. In mid-February, domestic price temporarily surpassed 200,000 Japanese Yen influenced by a slightly weaker yen. However, three-month LME prices dipped below 1,400 dollars after that and the yen strengthened, placing the domestic spot price at the level of 193,000 Japanese Yen on February 20.
