Under the aspect of low-loss and low-cost milk production, higher lifetime productivities or longer service lives of dairy cows are becoming increasingly important. However, the trend in farming practice points in a different direction. Service livesof cows are becoming shorter from year to year. Today, the service life of the animals inspected by Rechenzentrum in Verden (VIT) is 26 months, in other words just two lactation periods. In these 20 months, the animals tested yielded on average 18560 kgmilk. This average lifetime productivity is also too low from the economic point of view. With the process paid for milk today, the cow should yield a minimum of 20 000 kg milk or more in its life in order to cover costs. These figures clearly demonstrate the current difficult situation of the average dairy farm.
