Machaerium meridanum Melendez (Fabaceae, Papilionoideae, Dalbergieae), a new species from Venezuela

The new species Machaerium meridanum Melendez (Fabaceae,Papilionoideae, Dalbergieae) is described on the foothills of theAndean Cordillera of Merida in western Venezuela. The speciesis morphologically most similar to Machaerium acuminatumKunth and Machaerium acutifolium Vogel, from which itdiffers in the shape and number of leaflets, its subpedicellateflowers, and some features of the fruit. Its taxonomic affinitesare discussed. An illustration, a map, and a key to identify theVenezuelan species of Machaerium sect. Reticulata (Benth.)Taub. are also included.
