Ryegrass herbicide resistance was first detected in Australian paddocks in the 1980s and since then weed control has been going backwards. Some of Australia's leading researchers have been working hard to find solutions. Herbicide resistance in annualryegrass (Lolium rigidum) is an escalating problem in cereal-cropping across the entire wheat-belt due to increased reliance on herbicides as the main method for weed control. Resistance in ryegrass was first detected in the early 1980s and since then the incidence of resistance has risen steadily. Numerous GRDC sponsored random weed surveys conducted since 2003 have identified concerning levels of resistance to ryegrass. Across the entire Australian cropping zone at least 60 per cent of ryegrass in cropped paddocks is resistant to Group B herbicides (eg. Glean, Logran, etc.).
