The ability of weeds to thrive is limited in a competitive environment where crops such barley, wheat and, to a lesser extent canola, reign supreme. Western Australian researchers have examined the competitive ability of new cultivars and how the manipulation of certain factors can further improve weed suppression. A novel way to suppress weeds, such as annual ryegrass, is to increase crop competitive ability by using competitive crops and manipulating sowing rates. During the recent years, many growers have started using high sowing rates of wheat and barley to suppress weeds and manage the herbicide-resistant weeds.
