Powering Up without Upping the Power

Innovative architectural development helps keep dynamic and static power under control in programmable logic. The transition from desktop to laptop epitomises the trend for portable devices, but it brings with it a number of challenges as well as benefits. All "unplugged" devices share a common goal - to maximise the available power from increasingly smaller batteries. Yet, as semiconductor technology marches on, it demands greater power to support more complex devices with a greater number of transistors. As the demand grows for a truly mobile experience, it is also increasingly common to find no hard-wired data connection present. Unfortunately, this does little to reduce the demands made on the already overburdened battery. Instead, it leads to even higher power consumption to support various forms of wireless connectivity. Left unchecked, this insatiable appetite for power leaves batteries feeling completely drained!
