Easy access to information ranks as a central goal whether it's related to e-commerce or the globally-networked future of defense applications. In fact, many systems being designed today call for connecting systems across the world. These systems range from enterprise business servers to battlefield tactical systems to handheld devices. The challenge is to get the right data to the right place at the right time. Traditionally, most real-time embedded systems have not been required or had the need to interface directly with enterprise systems. Classic embedded design dictates that high-performance and deterministic systems not be tightly or even loosely coupled to enterprise systems so as not to negatively impact system performance. But as technology advances, and networks become global, the ability to loosely couple the enterprise with the embedded brings significant benefits to both computing worlds. The challenge for the system architect is how to manage these two worlds as they converge so as to leverage all of the benefits, thus realizing seamless data movement from the embedded system to the enterprise, and back again.
