As embedded and distributed control systems become more complex and more commonplace, developing high-quality, optimised designs has become much more challenging. One reason is that many domain experts, such as machine builders or control engineers, do not have the expertise required to develop embedded systems. These "domain experts" understand the mathematics or processes required for their systems, but they lack knowledge of low-level embedded development tools and semantics. Helping these domain experts over this hurdle requires a new approach to embedded design. Graphical system design is an approach to design that combines intuitive graphical programming with flexible commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware to help engineers design, prototype and deploy their embedded systems more efficiently.
